MAKE MUSIC DAY RETURNS – 21 JUNE 2022

The Australian Music Association is proud to announce Australia will once again take part in MAKE MUSIC DAY on Tuesday, 21 June 2022 joining 120 other countries across the world on a day that celebrates making music. And some of our favourite musicians and artists are joining the campaign to get us all to express ourselves musically. Kate Ceberano, Katie Noonan, Lee Kernaghan, Megan Washington, Catherine Alcorn, Jack Howard, Andy Baylor, Sarah Carroll, Lloyd Spiegel, Barry Conrad, Ruva and Bob Spencer are all Make Music Day Ambassadors, encouraging all Australians to take part in this global day of musical assembly.
Megan Washington said “Music is at the core of my life, so Make Music Day is important to me. Now more than ever we know the power that music has to connect, inspire, energize and soothe – it’s a way to communicate, to explore and celebrate ourselves”.
Make Music Day first launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique. It is now held on the same day in more than 1000 cities in 120 countries. In 2022 Make Music Day celebrates its 40th Anniversary and is in its fifth year in Australia.
Different from a typical music festival, Make Music Day is open to anyone who wants to take part. It’s a DIY Music Festival! Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — can organise their own gig, or join the many organisations that will host events, to share their music with friends, neighbours, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public and can be held online or face to face at locations across cities and towns.
Since its launch in Australia in 2018, Make Music Day has grown each year. Organised by the Australian Music Association, a not for profit whose mission includes growing music making in Australia along with the vision that sees Make Music Day becoming a national event. Anyone wishing to participate can simply organise a performance, and REGISTER it on the makemusicaustralia.org.au website. By registering participants become part of a truly global event.
Co-ordinator of Make Music Day Australia Rob Walker said, “We’re excited to give musicians of all levels the opportunity to create their own stage on Make Music Day. Making music we know is good for the mind, body and spirit and we look forward to musicians everywhere performing in their communities and online on 21 June 2022.” By establishing one specific day each year, 21 June, to celebrate music, Make Music Day encourages both amateur and professional music making, and empowers individuals to seek out ways to celebrate music in their community.
